What is the difference between a divorce and a legal separation?

A divorce (also known as a dissolution) and a legal separation are similar.  Both types of actions may include support, division of property, and custody.  The real difference is that for a dissolution, the parties are legally divorced when the judgment for dissolution is entered.  Either party can then marry a third party.  On the other hand, at the time of judgment for a legal separation, the parties are legally separated.  Neither party is legally able to marry a third party.  If an action is started as a legal separation, it can be changed to a divorce as long as a judgment has not been entered.  Unfortunately after judgment, a legal separation cannot be changed to a divorce.
